5G Router Connected but No Internet: SIM, APN and WAN Checks

Seeing the router’s WiFi name does not prove the mobile connection works. Separate local access, SIM registration and the data session, then test the application the site actually needs.

If a 5G router’s WiFi connects but the internet does not work, check the SIM status and mobile WAN session before changing wireless coverage. Confirm the SIM is ready, the plan allows the intended use, the operator’s APN is correct and the router has established its data connection. A visible WiFi name and strong signal bars do not prove that session exists.

The shop laptop joins WiFi immediately, but the order page never loads. Everyone can see the network name, so the router appears to be working. In reality, the local WiFi and the mobile broadband service are two different stages, with different settings and failure causes.

This is a connection guide. If the internet works but slows down at particular times or locations, use the mobile broadband speed and signal guide after completing these basic checks.

Separate the Three Stages of the Connection

LOCAL WIFI ≠ MOBILE DATA

Follow the Connection Through Three Stages

A successful first stage does not prove the next one works.

01 Local Connection

Client → Router

Confirm the client address and access to local management.

02 SIM and Registration

Card and Service Ready

Check detection, PIN, plan, coverage and operator compatibility.

03 Mobile Data Session

Router → Operator → Internet

Verify the APN and WAN status, then test DNS and the required service.

Keep the test path clear: the phone’s own mobile connection is different from a client using the router’s WiFi.

The mobile WAN has an assigned address The data session has progressed Check DNS, the client route and more than one destination.
One application works, another does not The fault may be narrower than the whole internet link Compare devices and the affected service before resetting the router.

Start with one client and one clear test. Turning mobile data on and off on a phone while it is also connected to the router can hide which connection supplied the successful page load. Keep the test path explicit.

Check the SIM and Plan Before the Antenna

Use the correct SIM size and installation procedure for the router. Follow the model instructions when powering down and handling the card. Check whether the status is ready, missing or waiting for a PIN; these are different conditions.

If a PIN is required, obtain the correct code from the operator rather than guessing. It is not the WiFi password or router administrator password. Confirm activation, available data and whether the plan supports use in the chosen router and location.

A controlled check with the same SIM in a compatible phone at the same site can help separate an account or coverage problem from router configuration. A phone success is useful evidence, but does not establish that the router supports the same bands or that the operator applies identical device policies.

For temporary premises and event work, confirm these points before the opening day. A plan that worked in a phone elsewhere is not a complete acceptance test for this installation.

Keep the SIM, operator information and test device together. Record which connection supplied each result; do not confuse the phone’s own service with the router’s WiFi.

Use the Operator’s APN, Not a Guess

An APN identifies the mobile-data service the router should use. A router may detect a profile automatically, but that profile can be missing or unsuitable for a particular operator, business service or roaming arrangement.

For the Archer NX205, the manufacturer’s guide places mobile connection profiles under Mobile WAN. Check the selected profile and enter only the parameters confirmed for the SIM: APN, authentication details and the applicable data-protocol choice. Menu wording can vary with the hardware and firmware version.

Save the original profile before making a controlled change. Do not copy a forum APN simply because it names the same country. Consumer, business and private-network services may require different settings even when they use the same radio network.

Also check that Mobile Data is enabled and that a router-side usage limit has not stopped the connection. A local counter is not the operator’s billing record. Reconcile the allowance and counter before changing a limit rather than treating it as free extra data.

Enable roaming only when it is required and permitted by the plan. An external-antenna setting should match the hardware actually connected. Neither is a universal checkbox to enable on every installation.

Read WAN Status Before Changing DNS

TP-Link’s troubleshooting guide separates its IPv4 status check into two branches: an Internet address of 0.0.0.0, and an assigned address. In the first branch, investigate the SIM, profile, supported network and data session. Changing the laptop’s DNS will not create a missing mobile session.

If the session has an address, compare a second client and more than one destination. Check the DNS settings supplied to clients and use the operator’s or organisation’s approved resolver for a controlled test. Record and restore the original settings if the test does not help.

A private or carrier-grade address is not automatically a failed connection. Ordinary outbound browsing and an inbound remote-access requirement are different questions. Mobile carrier NAT can prevent unsolicited inbound access even while web pages work; do not start forwarding ports just to fix a page that will not load.

For a router using IPv6 or a different status presentation, follow that model’s applicable connection diagnostics. The IPv4 0.0.0.0 example is a useful branch in a documented interface, not a universal test for every mobile network.

Confirm the Router Mode and the Real Site Conditions

A mobile router may also support an Ethernet WAN mode. Confirm which source should supply the internet and which physical port performs that role. A cable plugged into a LAN socket does not necessarily become a second internet source.

For the Archer NX205, check the exact regional model and operator bands. Its Gigabit Ethernet ports, mobile service and WiFi rates describe different parts of the system. A 5G network indicator does not promise a multi-gigabit laptop connection.

Keep an indoor router indoors, with suitable power and ventilation. The NX205 lists a 0–40°C operating range and a compact 99 × 99 × 190 mm enclosure. A better signal position must still be a suitable location for the equipment. A sun-heated windowsill or unprotected outdoor table can create a different problem.

If an outdoor receiver is needed, choose hardware and power arrangements intended for that role. For a second broadband path, the dual-WAN failover guide explains why a backup connection still needs an actual application test.

Prove the Connection with the Work It Must Do

Once browsing works, test the required workload from a client that is definitely using the router. Open the order system, send the intended upload or make the planned call. Repeat after a normal restart so a saved profile or PIN requirement does not surprise the next operator.

Record the SIM provider, router model and hardware version, selected profile, WAN status and the controlled tests already completed. Keep PINs and account credentials private. If support is needed, this gives the operator or Support Specialist a clear starting point.

Match the regional model, mobile bands, SIM service and APN. Its WiFi connection and mobile WAN session must both work for clients to browse.

Fix the stage that is failing. Local WiFi, SIM readiness and mobile data are separate checks. Establish a stable session, then assess speed, coverage and any backup-network requirement.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does my laptop say connected when the internet is unavailable?

It may be connected only to the router’s local WiFi. Check whether the router itself has a working mobile WAN session before changing the laptop’s wireless signal settings.

Does a SIM working in my phone prove it will work in the router?

It helps confirm the SIM and service at that location, but the router still needs compatible bands, the right profile and a plan that allows the intended use.

Should I change the APN every time mobile speed is low?

No. Confirm the operator’s correct profile when diagnosing a missing session. Once the session works, investigate signal quality, congestion and the rest of the path instead of repeatedly changing a valid APN.

Is 0.0.0.0 the same problem as a carrier-grade address?

No. In TP-Link’s documented IPv4 status check, 0.0.0.0 indicates that the connection has not been established. An assigned carrier-grade address can support ordinary outbound internet access while restricting inbound connections.

Can I put an indoor 5G router outside for a stronger signal?

Use it only within its installation and environmental requirements. Choose an appropriately rated outdoor receiver when the site needs outdoor placement, rather than exposing an indoor router to weather or excess heat.

When should I reset the router?

Preserve the settings and first check the SIM, profile, operating mode and WAN state. Use the exact model’s documented reset step when justified, and plan to restore the required configuration afterward.
