UPS Battery Lasts Only Minutes? Check Load, Age And Shutdown
A fully charged UPS can still run out quickly. Use actual load, model-specific minutes and shutdown history to decide whether to reduce demand, replace batteries or choose a larger system.

If a fully charged UPS now lasts only a few minutes, check the connected load, battery condition and shutdown history before replacing it. Compare its actual output in watts with runtime data for the exact model. Establish whether the UPS lost output or the NAS and servers entered their configured shutdown mode.
The UPS display says 100%. The lights go out, the NAS disappears from the network, and the office assumes the battery has failed. Yet that same symptom can come from a worn battery, extra equipment added over time, an incomplete recharge or a shutdown timer doing exactly what it was set to do.
A useful investigation separates how long the UPS can supply power from how long the business applications remain available. Those are different measurements, and they lead to different fixes.
Did The Battery Run Out, Or Did The NAS Stop First?
Start with the sequence of events. Record the mains-failure time, when services stopped and when the UPS output stopped, if it did. Keep the UPS event log and the NAS or server shutdown log before clearing any alerts.
| What You Observe | What To Check |
|---|---|
| The NAS stops, but the UPS still supplies other equipment | The NAS shutdown policy, battery-status messages and communication path. The battery may still have usable runtime. |
| Everything on battery-backed outlets loses power together | UPS output events, battery-low or overload indications, actual load and battery condition. |
| Equipment stops as soon as mains power fails | Which outlets provide battery backup, UPS faults or overload, and the equipment’s power requirements. Do not assume age is the only cause. |
| Runtime is shorter after a second outage | How much recharging occurred between the two events. A battery that has not recovered cannot repeat its fully charged runtime. |
For example, Synology DSM can enter Standby Mode after a configured delay or when the UPS reports low battery. In that mode, services stop and volumes are unmounted. Losing access to a shared folder therefore does not, on its own, prove that the UPS output has failed.
Where shutdown notifications travel over the network, keep the necessary switch powered too. A powered NAS cannot receive a network message through a switch that has already lost power. Check the supported USB or network arrangement for the installed equipment.
Record Four Facts Before Buying Anything
- The complete UPS part number. Record voltage, tower or rack format, installed battery packs and any communication card. A similar name or the same VA rating does not establish the same battery configuration.
- The actual connected load in watts. Read the UPS output measurement under representative work, including busy periods. Note the VA reading as well, so both output limits can be checked.
- The battery installation date and charging history. Include any recent outage, long storage period or period with the UPS disconnected from mains power.
- The required operating window. Decide which services must stay available, how long orderly shutdown takes and what reserve is needed if conditions worsen.
Photograph the model label and record the displayed load and alarms. Do not substitute a switch’s maximum PoE budget or the sum of power-supply nameplates for a measurement of the load actually connected to the UPS.
Count equipment once. The UPS sees the switch’s input power, which includes the power it supplies to PoE devices. Adding the same cameras’ or access points’ demand again would double-count that part of the load.
How Many Minutes Should This UPS Last?
Use the runtime information for the exact part number and battery configuration. As a concrete example, Eaton’s reference data for the 5P1550IG2 tower UPS, rated at 1550 VA / 1350 W, gives these figures:

| Connected Load | Reference Runtime |
|---|---|
| 200 W | 56 minutes |
| 300 W | 35 minutes |
| 400 W | 24 minutes |
| 600 W | 14 minutes |
| 800 W | 8 minutes |
| 1000 W | 5 minutes |
A five-minute result can be consistent with a healthy unit at a high load. It would warrant a different investigation if the same unit previously supported a much smaller, unchanged load for far longer. Battery age, temperature and charge state affect the installed result.
Do not transfer this table to every 1500 VA UPS, the rack version or another battery chemistry. If you are selecting a new system, the NAS and PoE UPS planning guide explains how watts, VA and shutdown requirements fit together.
Why 100% Charge Does Not Mean A Healthy Battery
A charge reading describes how full the battery is in its present condition. It does not restore the energy capacity the battery had when new. A worn battery can reach its charging target yet deliver a much shorter operating window.
For conventional valve-regulated lead-acid batteries, Eaton describes a typical service life of three to five years, with temperature, use and maintenance affecting the outcome. Its 5P Gen2 tower manual calls for proactive replacement around four years. Treat those as maintenance guidance for the relevant battery type, rather than a promise that every unit lasts five years.
Check the environment as well as the calendar. A UPS crowded against a heat source or installed with obstructed ventilation deserves attention. Record recurring battery or temperature warnings and arrange a proper assessment; repeatedly dismissing the alarm does not resolve the underlying condition.
Five Checks Before Ordering A Replacement Battery

- Allow the prescribed recharge. Follow the exact manual after storage, installation or an outage. For unexpected short runtime, Eaton’s 5P Gen2 tower troubleshooting guidance specifies 48 hours on mains power before further service assessment.
- Read existing events and alarms. Look for battery faults, overload, overtemperature and repeated transfers to battery. Note their timestamps alongside the application logs.
- Check the load under normal work. Identify equipment added since the last good result, including PoE devices and computers. Agree what can be removed from battery backup without breaking an essential service.
- Use the supported battery test. Follow the model’s prerequisites and plan for the equipment’s importance. The 5P Gen2 tower’s built-in test briefly exercises the battery; passing that short check is not proof of a full runtime at your workload.
- Escalate persistent short runtime. Ask for a battery or UPS assessment with the model, load, dates and logs. Use the manufacturer-specified replacement pack and procedure.
Do not casually disconnect mains power from a production rack to see what happens. A runtime and shutdown test should be planned with current backups, an agreed maintenance window and a recovery procedure. Battery work also needs the appropriate competent person and model-specific instructions.
Set A Shutdown Window That Fits The Available Minutes
The useful target is enough time to finish the required work and stop systems safely. A long shutdown delay is unsuitable if the battery can no longer support it.
Consider a planning example: an agreed test establishes a 14-minute operating window at the representative load. If orderly shutdown needs three minutes and the plan reserves another three minutes, the maximum waiting period before starting shutdown is:
14 minutes available − 3 minutes to shut down − 3 minutes reserve = 8 minutes before starting shutdown.
Those three inputs must come from the actual installation and its service requirement. The arithmetic does not turn the manufacturer’s 600 W reference into a tested result for your rack. If the operating window falls to five minutes, that same shutdown-and-reserve plan no longer fits, even with no waiting period.
Retest the complete chain in the maintenance window: outage notification, application shutdown, NAS or server state, UPS output behaviour and recovery when mains power returns. Keep enough network infrastructure available for any shutdown messages. Verify the restart policy too, so power returning does not leave essential services unavailable.
Replace The Battery, Reduce The Load Or Upgrade?
| The Finding | The Sensible Next Step |
|---|---|
| The battery has deteriorated; the existing UPS still suits the load and runtime requirement | Assess the specified replacement battery pack and the condition and support life of the UPS. |
| More equipment is connected than the original plan allowed | Separate agreed nonessential loads or reassess UPS capacity and runtime for the current installation. |
| The battery is healthy, but the required operating window is longer | Select a system with suitable runtime at the actual watts. Confirm supported external battery options if needed. |
| Output faults, charging problems or persistent temperature alarms remain | Arrange service or replacement of the UPS itself, rather than assuming another battery will cure it. |
Reducing nonessential load can improve the operating window. Agree the priority list first: an apparently ordinary network switch might carry storage access, shutdown notifications or communications that the business needs during an outage.
A higher VA label alone is not a runtime plan. Check watts, battery configuration, output connections, installation space and the communication method needed by the protected systems.
Keep The Exact Tower Or Rack Model In The Plan
Both are product families with several ratings. Their similar names do not make their battery arrangements interchangeable. For the 5P1550IG2 tower and 5P1550IRG2 rack models, Eaton lists no extended-battery capability; choose a compatible expandable system if longer runtime requires additional battery modules.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why Does My UPS Last Only A Few Minutes When It Says 100%?
The load may be high, the battery may have lost capacity, or the charge may not have recovered after an outage. First establish whether the UPS output actually stopped or the connected NAS or server entered its configured shutdown mode. Compare the actual watts with runtime data for the exact UPS and battery configuration.
How Long Should A 1500 VA UPS Run A NAS?
There is no single answer based on VA alone. Runtime depends on the exact UPS, battery configuration, battery condition and the total load, including connected network equipment. Use the manufacturer’s runtime data at the measured watts, then allow for orderly shutdown and reserve.
Does Passing A Battery Self-Test Prove Full Runtime?
No. A short built-in test and a controlled runtime test answer different questions. Follow the model’s test instructions and investigate persistent short runtime even if a brief self-test passes.
Can I Replace The Battery Instead Of The Whole UPS?
Possibly, if the UPS is otherwise serviceable and still meets the load, runtime and communication requirements. Use the specified replacement pack and procedure. A new battery will not resolve an overloaded, faulty or unsuitable UPS.
Why Does My Synology NAS Stop Before The UPS Battery Is Empty?
DSM can enter Standby Mode after the configured delay or when the UPS reports low battery. Services stop and volumes are unmounted to prepare for loss of power. Check the NAS and UPS logs together before treating this as battery exhaustion.
Should I Add An External Battery Pack For Longer Runtime?
Only if the exact UPS supports the specified pack. The Eaton 5P1550IG2 and 5P1550IRG2 examples here do not support extended batteries. If more runtime is needed, assess a suitable expandable model or another properly planned backup-power arrangement.
Keep The Minutes You Actually Need
Keep the existing UPS when its condition, load capacity and tested operating window still meet the requirement. Replace a worn battery with the correct pack when that restores a suitable system. Choose a different UPS when the current load, required runtime or equipment condition calls for it.
For an assessment, bring the exact part number, battery date, representative load in watts, event history and required shutdown time. A Support Specialist can work from those details to discuss the appropriate next step.
