Description

soSynology Surveillance Device License Packs are designed for expanding cameras, I/O modules, intercoms, access controllers, IP speakers, and transaction devices set up on Synology Surveillance Station. By default, you would have default licenses that come with Synology NAS/NVR; extra licenses can be purchased for additional surveillance devices as your business grows.

Licensing Plan

Synology NAS/NVR comes with default licenses1 that allow you to set up and manage surveillance devices. Synology also provides three options for additional purchased licenses: 1, 4 or 8 Surveillance Device License Packs; each comes with a single license key, allowing you to activate 1, 4 or 8 surveillance devices at a time.

To find out the maximum number of surveillance devices supported on each Synology NAS/NVR, please refer to the specifications of each model.

License Units

Under most circumstances, each IP camera, I/O module, IP speaker, intercom, and access controller will only require one license, while each transaction device will require two licenses. However, multi-lens cameras and video servers for analog cameras may require additional licenses.

License Activation and Management

In Surveillance Station, go to Main Menu > License > then click Add. The installation wizard will guide you through adding device licenses into Surveillance Station.

  • The number of default licenses may differ. You only need to purchase extra licenses when your deployment requires more licenses than the default ones listed below:
    • Synology NAS: 2 default licenses
    • Network Video Recorder: 4 default licenses
    • Deep Learning NVR: 8 default licenses
  • One license can be applied to one Synology product at a time.
  • To activate or deactivate license keys on your Surveillance Station, please make sure you can access the Internet to connect to Synology’s Authorization Server. If your NAS is designed to work in an offline environment, you can use DS cam to process the license authorization.
  • Purchased licenses can be migrated, while default license keys cannot.
  • If you have deployed Synology High Availability or a CMS failover server, there’s no need to purchase extra license keys for the failover server, as the licenses will be automatically migrated to the failover server when needed.

Cost-Effective Add-On for my brand New DS224+

That's why so many just buy the 1-Cam or 4-Cam packaged CCTV solutions at the local shop but they still have to hump around the house to install each camera with individual cable-runs, and learn how their system needs to be configured, etc. These systems are great for consumers who don't know anything about IP-based CCTV systems but if you're reading this review, I'm assuming you're already tech-savvy.

These systems are great for consumers who don't know anything about IP-based CCTV systems but if you're reading this review, I'm assuming you're already tech-savvy. Now have 12 CCTV IP Cameras all over my house connected and managed by my new DS224+ NAS. That is why I buy 1-Cam and 8-Cam, smooth installation overall. Got a buddy deal and cheapest I can find around online. Overall Cost-Effective and happy with the customer service. Speedy

Another 2 cameras

What else can I say? It allowed me to add a third & fourth camera to my setup.

It works

If you have a synology NAS, you may have discovered that you can use it to run IP cameras on your network. The only thing you need is your cameras, a PoE switch (or injectors), and the NAS. In my case, I use the NAS as a backup but I don't even come close to fully utilizing it so it is doubling as a station for my cameras.

Here's the issue with Synology. The units work on a licensing system for cameras. Most come with 2. If you only have 2 cameras, no big deal. You have everything you need right out of the box. If you want more, however, you have to buy licenses. This practice is really annoying. I did it because it's still cheaper than buying a dedicated unit (and adding NAS friendly hard drives, remember, they need to be surveillance or NAS rated, not standard hard drives and definitely not SSDs because of the constant read/write access).

Realistically, I labelled this 5 stars because it is exactly what it is supposed to be. You get the code, you enter it, and a half a second later, you have the ability to add a new camera. I just have a problem with Synology's practice of charging so much per camera.

Worked to expand DS1019+ from two to three cameras

Expanded my DS1019+ to three licenses (on top of the two built in) in order to use all three of the cameras in my house. Some people complain about needing a physical card instead of just an online code, but in the end this is more secure and I was able to put the card in a folder so I don't lose track if I needed it later. Emails and files are too easy to lose, which is slightly ironic considering this is going on a NAS.

Docked one star for the price. I feel like the mid-range 1019+ should have either had more licenses included than an entry level model, or the price of the licenses should be about half of what they are. Eventually I plan to add one or two more cameras and will have to weigh the cost of the licenses in deciding to proceed.
