Edifier QR65: USB Audio, GaN Charging and the Right PC Connection

The QR65 can play PC audio and charge devices, but those jobs use different connections. Identify the right USB socket and make the complete desk setup work.

For PC sound, connect the QR65’s dedicated USB-A audio input using its supplied USB audio cable, select USB mode and choose EDIFIER QR65 as the computer’s output. The USB-C sockets are charging outputs. A phone charging successfully from the speakers does not prove an audio connection has been made.

The speakers light up, the phone starts charging and the laptop still plays through its own tiny speakers. It is an easy mistake on a desk where several USB sockets look as though they should do the same job.

The QR65 combines active speakers, lighting and a GaN charger. Treat those as separate functions when setting it up. You can then solve the silent-audio problem without turning a tidy desk into an experiment with random cables.

Identify the Audio Input Before Connecting

The Edifier QR65 has USB-A audio, RCA line input and Bluetooth. Its separate charging bank contains two USB-C outputs and a USB-A output. The rectangular socket shape alone does not tell you whether a port carries audio or supplies power.

Read the rear-panel labels and use the USB connecting cable supplied for audio. Do not use that bundled audio cable as a charging cable. Keep the active speaker’s connection to the passive speaker in place and check that the mains power switch is on.

A useful desk check is to trace each cable with a finger before switching anything: computer to audio input, active speaker to passive speaker, and charger output to the device being charged. One clear purpose for each lead is easier to maintain later.

The selected port combination, cable and receiving device determine the available charging power.

This is a functional connection diagram, not a rear-port drawing. The supplied audio cable is for audio streaming, not charging.

The monitor does not need to be in the speaker’s USB audio path. If a dock is involved, first prove playback with the simplest supported computer connection. Add the dock afterwards. That makes it easier to identify whether a problem follows the speakers, dock or selected output.

For a USB-C-only computer, use a suitable data-capable connection to the supplied audio arrangement. A charge-only lead will not carry the audio data. Check the computer and adapter requirements rather than assuming any cable with a USB-C end is equivalent.

Get PC Playback Working in Order

  1. Connect the active and passive speakers with their speaker connecting cable, then connect mains power and switch the active unit on.
  2. Connect the computer to the dedicated USB audio input using the supplied audio cable.
  3. Select USB audio mode on the speaker. The QR65 manual identifies its USB input indicator as red.
  4. Choose EDIFIER QR65 as the computer’s sound output and play a familiar local track.
  5. Check volume on both the computer and speaker. The manual notes that USB-mode volume is adjusted separately.

Test system audio before opening a game or meeting app. If system audio works but one application is silent, inspect that application’s device choice and volume. If the computer does not detect the speakers, test the data cable and direct connection before changing sound effects.

Use the dedicated audio input for PC playback. Keep the charging outputs separate in the cable plan, and leave both speakers securely supported on the desk.

65W Charging and 70W Audio Describe Different Things

The 70W RMS figure is the speaker system’s total rated audio output. The 65W figure describes its maximum charging output. Neither number is a promise that a laptop will continuously charge at that rate.

The available charging power depends on the port combination, cable and receiving device. For example, the published QR65 allocation for USB-C 1 and USB-C 2 together is up to 20W and 45W respectively. It is not 65W on each at the same time.

Connection plan What to check
One compatible device on USB-C Either USB-C output is specified up to 65W when used on its own; the device negotiates what it accepts.
USB-C 1 and USB-C 2 together Plan around the documented 20W + 45W allocation, not two independent 65W supplies.
USB-C 1 and USB-A together This combination has a shared 15W maximum in the published allocation.
A high-power laptop during demanding work Compare the laptop’s input requirement with the available port allocation. Keep its appropriate charger if needed.

Start with one charging device, check its reported charging state, then add the second. If a laptop loses charge during work, record the workload and port combination before blaming the USB audio connection. Playback and charging are different tests.

Solve the Symptom You Actually Have

Symptom First useful action
Lighting works; no PC sound Confirm the audio socket, USB mode, selected output and both volume controls.
Phone charges; no music from it Charging is not an audio source. Choose a supported Bluetooth or wired audio path separately.
Computer sound moves to the monitor after docking Select the intended output again and check the affected app.
Only one speaker plays Check the active-to-passive speaker cable and channel balance with a known stereo track.
Buzzing persists with different music Investigate the audio path and power arrangement rather than changing charging ratings.

Use the speaker buzz and hum guide for unwanted noise. A socket or input mismatch needs a different fix from a ground-related noise problem.

Build a Desk That Stays Simple

Prove sound first, add charging second and label the cables you keep. Place the speakers symmetrically around the listening position, keep the supplied stands stable and leave access to the controls and rear connections.

The QR65 product details are useful when checking dimensions and supported inputs against your desk. Choose it for the complete listening and charging arrangement, with each connection doing its intended job.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use QR65 USB-C ports as PC audio inputs?

The QR65’s USB-C ports are charging outputs. PC USB audio uses its separate dedicated USB-A audio input. Check the rear labels before connecting.

Why does my phone charge but not play through the speakers?

The charging connection supplies power. Set up a supported audio input separately, such as Bluetooth or the appropriate wired audio path.

Which output should I select in Windows?

Choose EDIFIER QR65 in the computer’s sound output settings, then check the output choice inside any app that uses its own device selection.

Can both USB-C ports supply 65W at the same time?

No. The published two-USB-C allocation is up to 20W on USB-C 1 and 45W on USB-C 2. Other port combinations have their own limits.

Does 70W RMS mean the speakers charge a laptop at 70W?

No. Audio output power and charging output power are separate specifications. Match the laptop, cable and chosen charging-port combination.

What should I test before replacing a silent QR65 pair?

Confirm mains power, the speaker interconnect, correct audio socket and mode, computer output selection and volume on both the computer and speakers.
