Bluetooth Multipoint: Stop Calls and Music Switching to the Wrong Device

A phone and laptop can both remember the same headphones while only one has the audio you want. Make multipoint useful with a simple two-device test.

When Bluetooth audio switches to the wrong device, first separate pairing, connection and playback. Pause the other source, select the headphones inside the device or meeting app you want, and test each device alone. Then enable the exact model’s multipoint function and repeat with both connected.

You finish a call on the laptop, press play on the phone and hear nothing. Or music stops whenever the work computer wakes. Buying another pair of headphones may leave the same conflict in place: two devices are trying to use an audio connection without a clear handover.

Multipoint is useful for a phone-and-laptop routine, but the feature name does not explain every app’s behaviour. A short, repeatable test is easier than repeatedly forgetting and reconnecting everything.

Paired, Connected and Playing Are Different States

Paired means a device has a saved relationship with the headphones. Connected means there is a current Bluetooth connection. Playing means an application is actually sending audio through the selected output.

A long list of saved devices is not proof that all of them can connect simultaneously. Multipoint support and connection limits belong to the exact headphone model. The Shokz OpenRun Pro 2 supports two connected devices; that is different from mixing two music tracks together.

Before changing settings, write down the intended pair, such as “personal phone + work laptop”. Temporarily disconnect a nearby tablet or old phone that could otherwise reconnect during the test.

Each device can remain connected when the exact headset supports it. This is a connection map, not an audio mixer.

02 Make the listening task explicit

Test a phone track and a computer call separately before relying on the combined routine.

Meeting-app audio choices can differ from the operating system. Test the microphone as well as the speaker output.

Use a local music file or familiar track for the first test, then a short test call. Change only one thing at a time. If you start music, launch a meeting and answer a phone call together, a failure tells you very little about which device took over.

For example, a runner may use the phone on the way home, then join a laptop meeting at a café. The practical goal is straightforward: phone music plays when wanted, the meeting uses the chosen microphone and output, and the headphones remain available after the meeting ends.

Test that sequence before relying on it for an important call. Phone-call controls and internet meeting apps do not necessarily handle second calls in the same way.

Set Up OpenRun Pro 2 Multipoint Deliberately

Use the Shokz app’s model-specific multipoint controls where available. If using the physical controls, the OpenRun Pro 2 guide gives this sequence:

  1. With the headphones off, hold Volume + until pairing mode starts.
  2. Hold the multifunction button and Volume + until the confirmation sound, then pair the first device.
  3. Turn the headphones off. Enter pairing mode again and pair the second device.
  4. Turn the headphones off and on again, then confirm both devices connect.

Follow the OpenRun Pro 2 procedure rather than a button combination copied from an OpenFit or OpenSwim guide. Keep the two device names distinct so you know which connection you are checking.

Multipoint is useful for a phone and computer routine. Confirm the exact model, pairing procedure and app support before applying another headset’s instructions.

Find Which Device Is Taking Over

Neither device works reliably on its own Test each separately at short range before investigating multipoint.
The problem starts after docking the laptop Check whether the dock or display has become the selected audio output.

On Windows, check the chosen output in Sound settings as well as the meeting app. On a Mac, check the selected sound output and the app’s own device choices. “Bluetooth connected” is not enough when the call has been routed to the monitor speakers.

If the sound becomes muffled only while the microphone is active, use the Bluetooth call-quality guide. That is a different investigation from audio going to the wrong device.

Use a Five-Step Handover Test

  1. Connect the phone alone and play a track at a comfortable volume.
  2. Connect the computer alone and run a speaker and microphone test.
  3. Connect both, pause computer audio and start phone playback.
  4. Stop the track and join a test meeting using the intended headset devices.
  5. Leave the meeting, confirm it has released audio, then restart the phone track.

Record the step that fails, the two device models, operating systems, meeting app and headset firmware. That is a useful support brief. “Bluetooth sometimes fails” usually leads to a much longer troubleshooting conversation.

If only one step is unreliable, a temporary manual disconnect from the unused device can keep the day’s work moving while you investigate. It also provides evidence that the second connection is involved.

Choose the Routine That Works for Your Day

Keep multipoint when the handover works reliably for your actual phone, computer and apps. Use a single active connection for a critical session if that is more predictable. A feature is worthwhile when it reduces interruptions in practice.

Do not start with a factory reset when one forgotten laptop is simply reconnecting in the background. Clear stale pairings selectively where the product supports it, and keep model-specific changes separate from operating-system audio settings.

For an open-ear listening routine, compare the fit and supported functions of the OpenRun Pro 2 with the way calls and music will be used, rather than choosing from Bluetooth version alone.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does multipoint mean two audio streams play together?

Do not assume that. Multipoint keeps supported devices connected so audio can hand over. It is not a general-purpose mixer for simultaneous music from two sources.

Does OpenRun Pro 2 support two connected devices?

Yes. It supports multipoint pairing for two devices. Set it up using its own app or documented button procedure.

Why does my laptop say connected while sound comes from the monitor?

The Bluetooth connection and selected playback output are separate. Check the operating system and the meeting or music app’s chosen output.

Should I forget the headphones on every device?

First disconnect unwanted devices and test the intended pair. Remove a stale pairing when there is a reason to rebuild it; a full reset also removes working arrangements.

Will phone calls and online meetings use identical controls?

Not necessarily. Call handling depends on the device, application and supported controls. Test a real handover with the apps you use.

What information helps diagnose a repeated switching problem?

Record both source devices, operating-system versions, headset firmware, the app involved and the exact handover step that fails.
