UniFi Chime Not Ringing: Power, Adoption and Doorbell Pairing

A doorbell notification on your phone does not prove that the indoor chime is paired. Follow the power, network and ring-assignment checks for WiFi and PoE models.

UniFi Chime Not Ringing: Power, Adoption and Doorbell Pairing - ACE Peripherals

When a UniFi indoor chime stays silent, check power, online status and adoption before checking which doorbell is assigned to ring it. Then test volume, mute settings and the actual doorbell press. WiFi plug-in chimes, PoE chimes and an existing mechanical chime use different connections and setup paths.

Your phone receives the doorbell alert, live video works and the visitor is still waiting because nobody heard a sound inside. That does not automatically mean the chime has failed. The phone notification and the indoor sound are separate outputs.

Start by identifying the exact chime and the UniFi application managing it. This guide focuses on network-connected indoor chimes, not a universal wiring recipe for every doorbell circuit.

Identify the Chime Before Changing Settings

Chime type What it depends on First check
UP-Chime WiFi Smart Chime AC power and a supported WiFi connection Power, WiFi reachability and adoption
UACC-Chime-PoE Ethernet data and compatible PoE power Switch port, cable, power and adoption
Existing wired mechanical or digital chime A compatible doorbell circuit and correct relay configuration Exact doorbell and circuit instructions

The UP-Chime is a plug-in WiFi device. The UACC-Chime-PoE is a wired network device, even though the sound reaches you wirelessly through the room.

Confirm the exact regional plug and intended application before ordering. Similar-looking fabric fronts do not make the devices interchangeable in their installation requirements.

Check Power and Online State First

A PoE chime needs both power and a working data connection. Inspect the switch’s port state, the cable and any power events. The UACC-Chime-PoE has a rated 10/100 MbE network interface and a maximum consumption of 3 W. A negotiated 100 Mb/s link is therefore normal for this device, not evidence that it needs a faster cable.

For the WiFi chime, check that the socket is powered and that the device can reach its supported wireless network. A phone with a strong signal in the hallway does not prove that the chime has joined the correct network or can reach the managing application.

If the device is offline, resolve that first. Changing the doorbell’s ringtone assignment cannot repair a dead switch port, unsuitable power source or disconnected WiFi association. If several powered devices drop together, use the PoE camera troubleshooting guide for the wider cable and power investigation, while checking the chime’s own requirements.

Adopt the Device, Then Assign the Doorbell

Phone notifications are a separate output.

01 Power and network

Online device

For PoE, check cable, data and power. For WiFi, check power and a supported wireless connection.

02 Adoption and site

Correct siteManaged in the right place

Confirm the relevant Protect or Access setup. Do not transfer instructions between unrelated deployment types.

03 Ring assignment

Test the actual press

A working sound test does not prove the doorbell is assigned. Check volume, mute periods and the event.

Logical checks, not a universal electrical wiring diagram. Follow the exact device’s supported setup.

Adoption makes the chime available to the relevant UniFi application; assignment tells it which event should make it ring. One does not establish the other. Confirm the correct site and that the chosen chime is actually managed there.

For the WiFi Smart Chime in a supported Protect setup, use the Protect mobile adoption process and the required phone connectivity, including Bluetooth when prompted. Follow the current application’s instructions rather than borrowing an Access intercom procedure from an unrelated installation.

Then inspect the doorbell-to-chime association in the application managing that doorbell. In an Access deployment, confirm the supported caller or doorbell-call configuration instead. Exact menus vary with the application and version; check the device’s supported pairing route before resetting it.

If adoption itself fails, the UniFi discovery and adoption guide helps separate network reachability from a device already associated with another site.

Test the Sound and the Doorbell Trigger Separately

If the application offers a chime sound test, use it at a sensible volume. Then press the actual doorbell and compare the results. A sound test that works while a doorbell press does not points towards assignment or event handling, rather than the speaker alone.

Test result Next useful investigation
Chime is offline Power, cable or WiFi, network reachability
Online but silent during an available sound test Volume, mute state, configuration and device condition
Sound test works; doorbell press stays silent Doorbell assignment, selected site and event configuration
Sound rings but is hard to hear in another room Placement, volume and additional supported chime coverage

Check any mute period, schedule or volume setting offered by the current application. Test again with someone standing where people normally spend time. A chime hidden behind a closed utility door may be functioning correctly but poorly located.

If only the phone is silent, use the doorbell phone-notification guide instead. Replacing the indoor chime would not correct a phone’s notification permissions.

Choose a Location You Can Hear and Maintain

Position the chime where sound can reach occupied rooms and where the network connection remains reliable. Both models are indoor devices; a sheltered-looking outdoor wall is not automatically an appropriate environment.

The PoE model needs a planned cable route. Keep the chime accessible and place it where the sound can reach the intended rooms.

The WiFi version can be convenient where a suitable socket and reliable wireless access already exist. The PoE version suits a planned Ethernet route and central power arrangement. PoE can simplify local cabling, but it still depends on the powered switch and the upstream system.

Do not assume a network chime is a replacement transformer or relay accessory. Keep mechanical-chime electrical work separate and use a qualified installer where circuit changes are required.

Replace Only After Isolating the Failed Stage

Record the model, application, online state, switch or WiFi connection, sound-test result and actual doorbell-press result. This is more useful than “the doorbell works but the chime does not”. It lets a Support Specialist distinguish a pairing issue from a power or hardware fault.

Important for existing wired chimes: do not change a doorbell’s relay type to mechanical or digital merely to test a network chime. Ubiquiti warns that selecting a relay mode without the required connected relay can damage compatible doorbell hardware. Follow the exact model’s circuit instructions.

The practical choice: get the chime online, confirm adoption, test the speaker and verify the ring assignment. Choose WiFi for a suitable socket and wireless path, or PoE for a planned wired installation. A phone alert alone does not verify either one.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does my phone ring but the indoor chime does not?

Phone notifications and indoor chime output are separate. Check whether the chime is online, adopted in the correct application and assigned to the doorbell, then test its volume and actual ring event.

Is the PoE chime wireless?

Its network connection is wired Ethernet with PoE power. It needs a suitable cable and powered port. The UP-Chime is the WiFi-connected model.

Is 100 Mb/s too slow for the UACC-Chime-PoE?

No. Its specified interface is 10/100 MbE. A normal 100 Mb/s negotiation is not, by itself, a fault or a reason to buy multi-gigabit cabling.

Does adoption automatically prove doorbell pairing?

No. Confirm the doorbell-to-chime association and press the actual doorbell. A device can be online without being assigned to the event you expect.

Should I change the mechanical-chime setting to test it?

Do not change relay settings as a generic test for a network chime. Mechanical or digital relay modes concern the compatible wired circuit and can cause damage if configured without the required connected hardware.

Should I factory-reset the chime first?

Start with power, online state, the correct site, volume and assignment. A reset removes configuration and does not repair an underlying cable, power or reachability fault. Use it only when the model’s recovery process calls for it.
